PALO ALTO, CA: Playing in a constant downpour, the Stanford Cardinal earned the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League North's last playoff spot, with a surprisingly efficient 14-5 win over the visiting California Golden Bears.

Despite wicked playing conditions that had both goalie creases appearing to be mud-soup and standing water in other areas of the field, the Cardinal controlled the ball during extended portions of the game and the defense found enough good footing to shutdown California's offense.

The Cardinal sloshed to a 3-2 first quarter lead and led the rest of the way to earn a rematch with Sonoma State next weekend. Sonoma beat Stanford 15-1 on February 22nd during the regular season.

To celebrate the victory over their respected rivals, a majority of Stanford's players took a running dive into the big mudhole in front of their goal.

Stanford's three goaltenders-Joe Kennedy, Gavin Sun, and freshman Michael Zell-combined for 14 saves to shut the door on the Golden Bears and most likely, end all hopes of Cal's return to St. Louis.

Kiel Renick led all scorers with two goals and four assists, and midfielder Tyler Guiterrez was high goal scorer with four.
