#4 CSU Upsets #3 Michigan

NOTES:
CSU ranked #4 in USLIA Top 25 Poll despite big win over #1 Sonoma State; Michigan ranked #3 in USLIA Top 25 Poll and on a 10 game winning streak into this game

QUOTES:
CSU Head Coach (Flip Naumburg):
"I felt confident going into this game. We had some great practice coming in and we looked strong. I was a bit hesitant though when I saw (Michigan) only beat CU 4-2, I wasn't sure what kind of game to expect from them."

CSU Attack (Kelten Johnson):
"I was disappointed in (Michigan's) play to be honest. We didn't play our A game and neither did they. But, we have a lot of people stepping up with all of the injuries and I like that."

Michigan Head Coach (John Paul):
"We just got beat. Our offense struggled yesterday, so it was a concern into today's game. Basically, they wanted it, we didn't and they played that way."

GAME SUMMARY:
FORT COLLINS, CO – Coming off a huge win over #1 Sonoma State earlier in the week, the Rams were geared up and ready to face the now #3 ranked Michigan Wolverines as they made their first trip to Colorado. The game was the headliner of a day of lacrosse events at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins on Saturday, so there were quite a few fans present.
From the start, CSU seemed to dominate the quick-paced game offensively. There were only 4 penalties in the whole game and most of the scoring came in the 2nd half for both teams. CSU started the scoring early in the 1st quarter with two goals in the first three minutes of play. Thomas Robinson scored a beauty off a great pass from Matt Disney. He was followed less than a minute later by Kelten Johnson's goal from Jimmy Hasson. Michigan could only muster one goal and it came late in the quarter. Ben Herbst was able to smack one past CSU goalie Alex Smith with about six minutes to go in the quarter. It was 2-1 into the 2nd quarter.
The 2nd quarter was a mirror image of the 1st with only three goals between the two teams. CSU's Jared Katz got a great look and passed to Kelten Johnson to create a fast break to pick up another Ram goal. The Wolverines answered when Jason Gratson scored just a few minutes later and it was a one-goal game. That quickly ended as CSU's Matt Disney scored a quick stick goal just 15 seconds later. At the half, it was 4-2 CSU.
The 2nd half brought a plethora of goals. CSU continued their scoring streak and came up with two goals from Derek Koll and Matt Disney (his 2nd) to start the 3rd quarter. Michigan answered with two of their own from Ben Herbst (his 2nd) and Jeff Hanna. CSU then dominated the rest of the quarter with three unanswered goals. Thomas Robinson scored his 2nd goal of the game off a great feed from Jimmy Hasson. Matt Disney struck again with his third goal as it rolled past Michigan goalie Dan Webber. Derek Koll finished the quarter with his 2nd goal and it was 9-4 CSU.
The scoring dissipated a bit in the 4th quarter as each team picked up two goals. CSU scored first despite being a man down as Kelten Johnson picked up his 3rd goal from Jared Katz. Michigan answered with Jeff Hanna's 2nd goal from Sloan Buchan-McGilliard. CSU answered that with one final goal from Mark Plonkey. Michigan would have the final goal of the game from Ray Lombardi, but it wasn't nearly enough as CSU beat Michigan 11-6. CSU is now 10-2 and Michigan is 9-3.
