Colorado State and Utah Valley State Tabbed as Early Favorites for RMLC Crowns

November 15, 2005

The Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference released its Division A and Division B polls this week. Colorado State (Division A) and Utah Valley State (Division B) were both picked by league coaches to win their respective divisions.

Colorado State's selection came by a slim one point margin after Brigham Young's championship victory in 2005. CSU received 2 first place votes and 22 points in the poll while second place BYU received 2 first place votes and 21 points. The University of Colorado took the remaining first place vote and came in third in the balloting. The University of Utah (10 points) and Utah State University (5 points) round out the preseason poll.

In Division B, three teams also received first place votes. Utah Valley State took the majority and appears to be the clear favorite after their impressive second place finish at the national MDIA tournament last year. They received seven first place votes and 76 overall points. Both Fort Lewis College and Montana State University each took one first place vote and tied for second place in the poll with 65 points. The University of Northern Colorado finished slightly ahead of Weber State College for fourth place in Division B. Both teams were comfortably ahead of CSU-Pueblo, the Colorado School of Mines, new RMLC member Regis University and the University of Wyoming.

BYU returns as the reigning RMLC Division A champion after beating CSU 8-7 in last year's championship game while UVSC's comfortable 19-10 victory over Montana State took Division B. 2005 was the first season in nearly a decade in which an RMLC team did not make the Division A semifinals at the MDIA national tournament. CSU was disqualified for eligibility violations while BYU and Colorado were upended in the national quarterfinals. RMLC teams begin play in late February of 2006.
