Mar. 21st, 2004 - #13 Florida State Stops Indiana
Tallahassee, FL -- The Florida State Seminoles opened the second half of their season by defeating a very game Indiana team 13-8 on a sunny 80 degree day in Tallahassee. The victory brings FSU's record to 8-1 on the year, with 5 regular season games remaining.
In the first quarter, DJ Romanchuk got the Seminoles on the board first. Indiana came right back with a man up goal 2 minutes later. It was the first man up goal FSU allowed in the last 13 attempts. With 7 minutes remaining in the quarter, DJ Romanchuk again made a spectacular goal by picking up a ground ball and shooting it through his legs for a goal. At the end of the quarter, the score was 4-2 in favor of FSU.
The second quarter was a real defensive struggle. Indiana was able to control FSU's run and gun offense and limit them to 2 goals for the quarter, by utilizing great ball control on their offensive side. However, the Seminoles defense was up to the task as they only surrendered one goal in the quarter. At halftime, the score was 6-3.
FSU head coach Bill Harkins told his team, "We are not doing anything that wrong; we just need to tighten up on groundballs, and finish our opportunities."
The third quarter was played much the same way as the second. The defenses dominated the game on both ends of the field. Both teams were able to clear the ball successfully, but neither team could amount a scoring run. Kevin Paustian scored before the end of the quarter to make the score 8-4 going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the Seminoles finally began to figure out the tough Indiana defense and scored 3 fast goals to cushion their lead. Indiana showed a lot of fight by scoring some last goals to make the score a 13-8 final.
Goals for FSU came from DJ Romanchuk (3), Kevin Paustian (2), Shawn Quinn (2), Seth Alte (1), Steve Garafolo (2), Mike Borkowski (1), and Justin Campbell (1). Goalie Jeff Goren was once again solid in goal, recording 15 saves.
FSU next faces Lindenwood University next Thursday, March 25th.
