RAMS OVERWHELM AUBURN WITH 23 GOALS IN SEASON OPENING VICTORY

Arlington, Texas
For Immediate Release

By Garrett Fitzgerald
February 12, 2005

Some say the first goal of a team's season will give a good prediction as to how the rest of the year will go; if there is any truth to that saying it's going to be a good year for the 2005 CSU Rams. Just 1:22 seconds after the opening face off freshmen Shay Cunningham (Algonquin HS, MA) executed a spectacular dive shot, becoming totally horizontal in the air before releasing the ball past the Auburn goaltender. His goal was the first of many against the Tigers as the Rams rolled to a 23-2 victory.

There would be a lot more to come for the Rams during their season opening game in Arlington, Texas as they led the quarter with eight straight goals on their way to a 9-1 lead after one. Pat Bird (Bishop O'Dowd HS, CA) a sophomore midfielder, led the charge for the rams scoring three goals in the opening period. Bird was outstanding scoring six goals and passing for one assist.

The Rams continued to dominate through the remaining quarters, while Auburn didn't help its cause with nine penalties for 8:00 mins. CSU scored on five of its extra man opportunities while holding Auburn scoreless on its five chances..

Substantial performances also came from seniors Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest HS, CO) and Tim Farquhar (Collegiate HS, VA). Stanitz-Harper a senior captain led all attackmen in scoring with four goals. Farquhar lived up to his 1st team All-American billing, getting four goals and two assists.

Several new additions to the Ram's lineup also made an impact in the opener. Shay Cunningham showed what a valuable addition he will be by notching one goal, two assists, and scooping up five groundballs. Freshmen Ben Wallace (Thomas Jefferson HS, CO) was good for two goals in his first game.

On the defensive end for Colorado State, it was a solid overall effort holding Auburn to only two goals on nine shots on goal. Senior captain Ryan Price led the defense with three ground balls and two takeaways. Junior LSM Matt Reiss (Sycamore HS, OH) and sophomore defenseman Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS, PA) each had two groundballs and two takeaways a piece.

All three active goalies for CSU saw time in the game. Junior third team All-American Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit, KS) was solid in goal with three saves while freshman Tyson Ehinger (Salisbury Prep, CO) held Auburn scoreless in twenty minutes of work.

Notes:
- Seven of the teams goals came from new additions to the Rams
- This game was the first of a four game trip to Texas for CSU, tomorrow the Rams will square off against Texas Tech and #13 Texas A&M

RAMS GET SECOND WIN OF SEASON AS 13 GOAL OPENING HALF LIFTS COLORADO STATE PAST TEXAS TECH

Arlington, Texas
For Immediate Release

By Garrett Fitzgerald
2/12/05

Colorado State's four game road trip to Arlington, TX continued to be a success as the Rams overwhelmed the Texas Tech Red Raiders 21-7 on Saturday morning. CSU rained shots on the Tech goal and were relentless on both sides of the field as a light drizzle fell from the Texas sky. Just 18 hours after dismantling Auburn, CSU's offensive output continued to impress as 7 different players scored 2 goals or more in a balanced effort that put away a team coming off one of its biggest wins in years. Texas Tech had the upset of the weekend against #13 Texas A&M on Friday night, but could not keep the momentum going against a potent CSU squad.

The Rams offense was impressive and showed it's depth yet again, with three players scoring hat tricks and four more individuals scoring two goals each. For the second day in a row, Freshman Shay Cunningham (Algonquin HS, MA) scored the first goal for Colorado State just 1:53 into the game. Cunningham had a breakout game for the Rams with three goals and four assists bringing his season total to 10 pts, he also scooped up six groundballs in the game.

As if one great performance wasn't enough, two more Rams would get hat tricks for the second time in as many days before the game was over. Tim Farquhar (Collegiate HS, VA) had another fantastic day getting three goals and one assist, also brining his season total to 10 points. Captain Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest HS, CO) put in another solid effort scoring three goals with two assists.

In the game 11 different Rams got in on the scoring for Colorado State. The other most notable performances came from four individuals. Tim Chorey (Algonquin HS, MA) had his first multi goal game getting two goals. Freshman Dylan Bowman (Fairview HS, CO) had an excellent outing notching his second and third goals of his young Ram career. Sophomore staring attackmen Danny Stevens (Suffern HS, NY) shot in two of six today with four groundballs.

The Rams starting defense was solid for a second time, and only allowed three goals in the first half. In the second half the second defensive unit took over allowing only ten shots from Texas Tech for the rest of the game. First year defenseman Dylan Preble (Bainbridge HS, WA), looked promising and once again Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS, PA) was impressive with two takeaways and two steals. The entire defense also was nearly perfect clearing the ball, going 21 of 24 on the day.

The game between these two non-conference teams was fairly clean with the Rams having five penalties and the Red Raiders having only four. Texas Tech went one for five on their man ups, while the Rams went two for four and took their season average to 53.8% on extra man.

Every player on the Rams sideline saw action in the game including all three goalies. Later this afternoon Colorado State will take on #13 Texas A&M at 7:00pm in the highlight game of the weekend's schedule. The Aggies will be looking for redemption after falling 9-11 last night against the Red Raiders.

Notes:

- This is the third time that the Rams have had multiple games in a single day during their history. The last time coming both during the 2003 season against Florida/Virginia Tech and UVSC/Utah.
- Today's game marks the first ever contest between Texas Tech and Colorado State.

COLORADO STATE'S OFFENSE EXPLODES FOR 24-7 WIN OVER #13 TEXAS A&M

Arlington, Texas
For Immediate Release

By Garrett Fitzgerald
2/13/05

When the Colorado State Rams arrived at Maverick Stadium on the University of Texas-Arlington campus they were greeted with a downpour that soaked just about everything including the Astroturf playing surface. For the second time in a day Colorado State suited up for the third game of their Texas roadtrip against the preseason #13 Texas A&M Aggies. Even the rain couldn't keep the Rams offense cold for long as the Rams fired 38 shots on goal in the 24-7 win under the lights.

In what was touted as the premier match up of the weekend for the Rams, the preseason #13 Texas A&M Aggies were looking to make up for a upset loss to unranked Texas Tech just 24 hours before. The teams opened up the game trading turnovers, then with the rain tapering off at 12:56 in the opening quarter veteran midfielder Tim Farquhar (Collegiate HS, VA) unleashed a blistering crank shot that found its way past A&M goalie Andrew Dabney.

Even though the Aggies came out playing and inspired brand of lacrosse in the first 20 minutes, a four goal game by freshmen Chris Deeke and solid early goaltending just wouldn't get it done. A&M was able to stay within two until the mid second quarter, however the CSU's offence couldn't be held in check forever. Colorado State went on a 5-1 run starting at 6:41 in the second to give them a six goal lead at halftime. In the third the Rams scored six of the next seven to finish off Texas A&M.

The Rams offense was fueled by several astounding individual performances, leading the way was captain Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest HS, CO) with seven goals on eleven shots. Stanitz-Harper had several critical goals early, specifically scoring the first goal of the Rams second quarter run. Farquhar had another outstanding game scoring four goals and two assists, bringing his season total to a balanced seven goals and eleven assists. On the evening Colorado State had nine different goal scorers, freshmen David Ford (Air Academy, CO) had an impressive performance getting the first two goals of his career.

This game would mark the first time during the season that the Rams defense would play without an immediate multiple goal cushion. Junior goaltender Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit, KS) rose to the challenge. Jokisch made several key stops while the game was close, particularly an incredible off stick kick save while the game was tied at 1-1.

Two of the Rams starting defensemen had excellent games, sophomore Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS, PA) and senior captain Kellin Bershinsky (Poudre HS, CO) each had two takeaways and four groundballs. The CSU man down unit was great as well killing off four of the six A&M extra man opportunities.

Notes:
- The Rams thus far have gone 3-0 on their Texas trip with the last game of the weekend coming against the University of Texas- Austin for their fourth game in just over 48hrs.
- Ryan Trude (Mt. Lebanon HS, PA) a transfer from Wooster, got the his first goal of his Ram career against the Aggies.

RAMS MOVE TO 4-0 ON THE SEASON AFTER 18-2 ROUT OF TEXAS

Arlington, Texas
For Immediate Release

By Garrett Fitzgerald
February 13, 2005

In what was Colorado State's fourth game in less than 48 hours, the Rams showed no signs of slowing down as they decimated the preseason #20 University of Texas-Austin Longhorns 18-2. CSU came out firing on all cylinders scoring the first 13 goals of the game while holding Texas scoreless into the third quarter. With the win over the Longhorns, CSU rose to a perfect 4-0 on the season after sweeping a weekend road trip over Auburn, Texas Tech and Texas A&M. For the first time since the Rams arrived in Texas they were treated to sunshine and 70 degree temperatures.

Offensively, sophomore attackman Shay Cunningham (Algonquin HS, MA) was just heating up when he recorded his first of seven assists on the opening goal of the game. Cunningham was on fire offensively also getting two goals giving him a team leading total of nine points on the day, and bringing his season total to 22 points. Those 22 points tie Cunningham with Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest HS, CO) for the team lead, Stanitz-Harper had another tremendous game by finding the back of the goal four times on the day. In addition, Stanitz-Harper assisted on another Ram goal and scooped up five groundballs.

CSU had 11 different goal scorers on the day. Sophomore attackman Danny Stevens (Suffern HS, NY) also registered a hat trick. All in all, Colorado State's starting attack accounted for nine of the team's 18 goals. Possibly the most exciting goal on the day came from an unanticipated place. After taking the ball over center on a clear, defenseman Kellin Bershinsky (Poudre HS, CO) circled the goal and rifled a shot passed the Texas goalie. The goal was the first of the captain's career and was the first goal of the season for a CSU longpole.

The Rams shut out the Longhorns for the first 35:00 minutes and the defensive unit was virtually unbreakable only allowing two goals on the day. All the CSU longpoles got playing time in the game, as well as all three active CSU goalies. Sophomore LSM Ian Wilson (Arapahoe HS, CO) who has been one of several face off men for the Rams this year was imposing going six for nine at the X, putting his season win percentage at 65.9%.

During their four game roadtrip to Texas Colorado State put up some impressive numbers, out scoring their opponents 86-18, and out shooting them 240-80. The Rams have next week off but will travel to Greeley to play Northern Colorado on February 23rd. The first true test of CSU's season will come against Division III Colorado College on the 26th. CSU defeated the Tigers 11-6 last year in an emotionally charged game.

Notes
- With Nick Stanitz-Harper scoring 22 points over the weekend he has vaulted up two spots on the CSU all time points scoring list, he only needs 25 more points to take sole possession of third place on the list.
