Apr. 2nd, 2001 - Georgia Tech splits at home
On last Friday night, Tech hosted another top 15 team, Stanford, making a spring break trip to the East Coast. The Yellow Jackets and Cardinal played an intense first half with the two teams playing strong defense. Tech dominated early but towards the end of the first half Stanford got on a bit of a roll and looked to pull away from Tech. In the second half, Tech's defense played strong but could not stop the Stanford offense. The Tech offense could not get things going as Stanford prevailed 14-3 with speed and talent. Scoring for the Jackets was our Freshman trio of Ryan Hansen (1 goal), Bob Jaeger (2 goals) and Will Oakley (1 assist).
Saturday, Georgia Tech faced Florida State, the last of our home games for the season. This was an important league contest for the Yellow Jackets as they looked to qualify for the SELC Tournament in Chattanooga. Tech came out strong and led 5-3 at the half behind goals from Tighe Livingston (2 goals, 1 assist), Bob Jaeger (3g, 2a) and Mike Schmidt (1g) and Brent Burdett (1g). In the second half Tech got out early and was up three heading into the final quarter with a couple of goals from Jaeger and one from Ryan Hansen (1g) on a gorgeous cross crease feed from Livingston. In the fourth quarter, FSU refused to quit and came on strong to creep within one at 10-9 late in the quarter. But defensemen Austin Karp took a clear coast to coast and scored with 3:48 left and put Tech up 11-9. FSU quickly answered but the defense stepped up and held the Seminoles scoreless for the remainder of the game to preserve the 11-10 victory. Mike Wojtaszek played an incredible game in stopping 38 shots (28 saves, 10 goals allowed). Great job also by the defense of Dave Clark, Greg Moody, Bryant Jarrell and Karp.
This week, Tech travels to Auburn on Thursday night for another tough SELC game.
