Michigan 16, Tennessee 9
Mar. 30, 2001
The Vols took to the field Friday night against the 2nd ranked Michigan Wolverines. After a week of practice following spring break, the Vols were eager to face the Wolverines and the first half proved to be a competitive battle. Junior attackman Jason Lewin started off quickly with a goal within the first minute. Michigan responded with two consecutive goals before middie Joseph Barringer found Lewin for his second goal in transition. The Wolverines responded once more and ended the first quarter leading 4-2. The Vols came out strong and brought the score to a tie with goals from Mark Mahshie and Dan Schlacter. Michigan responded once again with goals of their own and after a man-up goal by Vol middie Pete Angelone, the game went into halftime with the Wolverines clinging to a 6-5 lead.
The second half proved why Michigan is the 2nd ranked team in the nation as they continually picked apart the Vol defense with quick ball-movement and strong cuts. With two five goal quarters in the second half, the Wolverines pulled away from the Vols. The Vols got two goals a piece from Brian Biloski and Mahshie in the second half to bring their final total to 9. After the tough battle and effort that the Vols put out against Michigan, they would have a little break before taking the field again to faced the Hokies of Virginia Tech the next day.

Fourteen hours after losing a tough game against the Michigan Wolverines, the Vols regrouped to face SELC rival Virginia Tech in an important game that would most likely decide the number one seed for the SELC tournament. With a few hundred fans, parents, and other supporters in attendance, the game began with the Hokies exploding in the first quarter for 8 goals. By possessing the ball for most of the first half the Hokies moved the ball well and continually found open teammates for 12 first half goals. The Vols only managed to get 4 goals the entire half, two from middie Tripp McEachern and one a piece from Jason Lewin and Bert Ho. Down 12-4 at half time, the Vols were determined to come out strong.
However, the Hokies quickly shut the door on any Vols comeback as they increased their first half lead to 15-5 after the third quarter. The Hokies continued to move the ball quickly and efficiently in the second half and the Hokie D and keeper held the Vol offense to a mere 4 goals in the second half. Senior middie Pete Angelone had two goals in the half as Ho and Lewin each added another goal to bring the Vol total to 8. With a short week of practice, the Vols will then travel to Illinois Thursday evening and face the defending National Champions, Brigham Young and the University of Illinois the following day.
