Dec. 3rd, 2001 - Buff Grubb steps down as lacrosse coach at the University of Tennessee
Buff Grubb announced today that he will be stepping down as head coach for Tennessee lacrosse after nine years guiding the program. Grubb cites career developments as the reason for relinquishing his role as coach of the Volunteers.
"I've been offered a very appealing position within the outdoor specialty industry. Unfortunately, the job is based near Greensboro, NC and that's a little too far to consider commuting to practice. It's a tough decision," said Grubb, " but with two of my daughters approaching college, sometimes you have to go with what is the best for your family."
Grubb coached the Volunteers to a 114-60 record over the nine years as head coach. Included in that record were four SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference championships (1993, 1994, 1999, & 2000) and three consecutive appearances in the USLIA National Championship Tournament. Grubb was honored as SELC Man of the Year in 1994 and Coach of the Year in 1999.
He also serves as SELC vice-president and conference director on the Board of Directors of the USLIA. At this time, he anticipates in continuing to perform those duties.
"I'd like to be able to continue to contribute to college club lacrosse in some capacity," states Grubb. "It's a great sport and it's been my privilege to get to know a lot of outstanding people over the last nine years, not only within the Tennessee program but also players, coaches, officials, etc. from other teams and conferences. I've definitely been enriched from the experience."
Long time assistant head coach Alex White will assume the reins for the Volunteers in 2002. White has been associated with Tennessee lacrosse as a player and coach since 1982.
"I'm confident the program is in good hands with Alex," says Grubb. "He's been through it with me for years and is an outstanding coach in his own right. He's definitely made life easier for me the last few years and I think he can bring a fresh perspective to the team next season."
